We’re going to Brazil!

Well, after spending several restful weeks with family in suburban Atlanta, we are finally on our way to South America! We have enjoyed plenty of family time with cousins, grandparents and dogs. The kids worked on their homeschool assignments and I upgraded my amateur radio license. We took a fun day trip to Dahlonega GA and went to the gold mining museum (social studies! earth science!). We played many games of canasta and enjoyed some cozy movie nights and slept in late whenever we wanted to. We bought some new supplies and set aside items we no longer want to carry with us (thanks Omi and Granddad for letting us store our junk at your house!). We permethrin-treated clothes to wear in the jungle and bought new travel rings so we can leave our more valuable wedding rings in the US. Now it’s time to get moving.

As I write this, we are at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. I’ve been flying in and out of ATL for over 20 years since I first visited Marcus’s family for New Year’s Eve at the tail end of 2001. Mostly domestic, but a few international flights to the Caribbean. This is by far my biggest departure from here though, both literally (it’s a 10-hour flight to São Paulo) and psychologically. After this, we don’t plan to be back in the States until next June. It feels a bit like when I first left the country to be an exchange student in Germany as a teenager – headed to a place I’ve never been, where I barely know the language or culture, and with only a vague notion of what to expect. I am both nervous and incredibly excited. This time with kids to be responsible for!

Marcus pointed out that this will be a new continent for all of us (and my sixth!). We are very excited about the next few weeks. After a few days in São Paulo we will head to Manaus and spend several days on a tour in the Amazon. Then we will rest and recover in Rio for a few days before another adventurous tour in the Pantanal. We are all looking forward to wildlife spotting, fishing, cruising down rivers, and hiking through jungles. Maybe also sleeping in hammocks in the jungle! After all that, we plan to go to Iguazú Falls, then eventually reunite with our car in Montevideo near the end of November. Epic adventures continue, and we look forward to sharing more stories with you soon!

  1. São Paulo! I don’t know if they are in their home neighborhood, but @osgemeos (@xabu and @kanciukaitis), their mom Margarida, uncle and sister all live in SP. I met them when they were doing their murals on 14th St (!) Please let me know if you have time to meet them. They also collaborated with @jr on a children’s center shaped like a crescent 🌙 in Rio.
    Safe travels!

  2. Enjoy and be safe! I love reading of all your adventures!
Love and Hugs to all of you!
