The fifth member of the family is a 2022 Toyota 4Runner. We’ve christened her Haruka Maru.
Since we’re going to be living with and in the car for a year, we’ve added a lot of things to make life easier and more comfortable.
Most obviously on top, we’ve added an upTOP Overland Bravo roof rack to give us the necessary space and mounting points for everything else.
With the roof rack in place, next came a Condor XL 4-person tent from Roofnest. Given that two of us are kids, we can all four sleep comfortably up there. There’s a little bit of Tetris about who sleeps where but I think this is mostly political about who is next to whom and who absolutely can’t sleep next to someone else.
There’s a little bit of space left in front of the tent where we’ve put a small cargo box.
The final piece on top is a ROAM 6.5′ awning.
Downstairs we’ve made a custom drawer setup to keep our stuff organized. This gives us two deep drawers for mostly kitchen and living supplies as well as a base for a slide-out drawer for our Dometic CFX 3 45 cooler.
The cooler (and modern, connected life) prompted us to add a Genesis dual battery system.
Finally, in the back we’ve got a Rigd Ultraswing tire carrier. This allows us to move the spare out of the way so we can mount a pair of Trail’d water tanks where the tire used to be, as well as take advantage of the Rigd’s attachments for camp table and probably some other stuff that we’ll pick up as we go.
