We went to the Alamo because I read a book about it and I thought it was awesome.
Texas used to be a part of Mexico. Mexico used to be a part of Spain. A Mexican priest started a revolution against Spain. Spain’s government killed him but the Mexicans overthrew Spain. Mexico first had an emperor but a general named Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna killed him.
Two lawyers were put in prison for fighting. They sent a letter for help. One of the lawyers was William Barret Travis.
Santa Anna overthrew the current president. The Texanos started a revolution against Mexico. Mexicans were in the Alamo fighting the Texanos so the Texanos besieged it. They waited outside for weeks trying to starve them out. The problem was they did not have enough food either. When everyone was about to quit and go home Ben Milam (a guy who had tried to take over Texas) convinced everyone who was part of the siege to attack. They took over the Alamo in the Battle of Bexar but Ben Milam was killed. After they took over the Alamo a lot of Texanos left to go to their families so William Travis sent a letter for more help in case Mexico attacked them.
Jim Bowie came to help, as did Davy Crockett and his Tennessee boys. They worked on repairing the Alamo. Santa Anna told the defenders nobody would be spared He would kill them all. William Travis drew a line in the sand and said anyone who crossed would stay and die in the Alamo. Everyone crossed. When they all slept Santa Anna attacked. Mexicans used ladders and axes to get in. They fought for 30 to 90 minutes but they don’t know. None of the Texanos survived.

I have never been to the Alamo. It has been on my want to do list for a long time. Thanks for your retelling of the story of the events leading up to the actual battle at the Alamo. That’s really interesting and much more complex than I expected. You are becoming quite a historian! Thanks for adding this to your blog.
Good history lesson Syd. I’ve visited the Alamo but didn’t remember all of those details. It’s a fun and very historical place. I hope to return some day.
I, too, read about the Alamo when I was about your age, Syd, and wondered and fantasized about what it must have been like to be there. We used to pretend we were there, fighting the great battle. There’s a great movie you might check out – “The Alamo”. It was made in 1960 and starred John Wayne and many other stars of the time. Enjoy – and welcome home!
Such a great account about the Alamo, Syd!
