Our Horse Ride in San Augustin

Our Horse Ride in San Augustin

A couple of days ago we went on a horse ride.  We stopped every once in a while.  We got off and looked at an archaeological site. At the place we were staying they offered horse tours so we got a guide and some horses even though the tour was about four hours long.

Our first site we visited were some ancient statues.  No one knows the name of the tribe that made the statues. They  do not know the name of the tribe because they did not use written language and they died out before the Spanish came.

We then got back on our horses and rode to the next stop.  We looked down a canyon to see a river called the Rio Magdelena. We had to walk up and down a hill to get there but it was very pretty.

Our next stop was more statues and a burial site.  The tombs had painted rock statues.  The bodies had been moved to a park to be protected from body snatchers. No one knows what The statues at the tombs mean.

We then went to a park with more tombs and statues.  Statues with one arm over the other are tomb guards. Some of the statues are eagles with snakes in their mouths, the eagles a sign of bravery.

  1. It’s the Four Muskateers! You guys are having the time of your lives! Four hours on a horseback tour? I wouldn’t be able to walk for days! Enjoy!

  2. Your four-hour horse ride must have been an ordeal. That, added to the scary statues made for a memorable trip. You are seeing and doing so many new things on this trip. You will have stories of this adventure for years. I look forward to hearing some of them.

  3. Traveling like the locals! Four hours on horseback is quite a ride! I guess your practice at Grandpa Mike’s ranch and other locations on your trip around South America helped. Thanks for keeping us updated on your adventures! Love you all!
