For Mother’s Day we did something really fun. We went to a Mud Volcano! We drove there and got out of the car to see a 40 foot(ish) tall mountain thing. There was mud all over it, not spilling out continuously but covering parts of the hill. We put on our bathing suits, bought tickets and went up to the top. There was a mud pit about the size of a small room there and they told us it was 2,000 meters deep but we wouldn’t sink into it.
We got in and found out for ourselves that it was true. The mud was definitely deeper than us but you physically couldn’t sink below your shoulders. It was crazy and unlike anything we had ever done. Then some other people came in. These people were from Jamaica and really into parties and singing. They seemed to have a really fun time. The mud wasn’t cold but it also wasn’t hot.
We got out after about 20 minutes so other people could come in. They brushed most of the mud off and then we headed down to the river where some ladies were ready to clean the mud off of us. They waded into the water with us and told us where to stand. Then, they started to pour water on us and scrub us down. The only downside was that they scrubbed EVERYWHERE. Baba has a story to share about this;
Baba: I was sitting in the water, getting water poured over my head while the lady was wiping the mud off of me. I was feeling pretty clean and thinking about going back to shore when the lady reached into the water, grabbed my swimsuit above the knee, pulled, and started saying “Naked! Naked!” The water was very muddy and my modesty was in no real danger, so off the suit went. While I scrubbed any remaining mud from myself, she cleaned my suit and then handed it back to me so I could exit the river.
The mud volcano was super fun and I’m so happy we got to do it because I had never even seen a mud volcano before and it was such a cool experience getting to go there.

Really interesting!! I guess this was an experience that I never anticipated. How did some of your bodies seem so clean when you had mud all over everywhere else? You will probably not object to a little soil on yourselves next time.
Now THAT’S a story to remember! Sally and I did mud baths in the Dead Sea years ago and everyone looked so funny – but everyone had huge smiles and loved the experience! I’m glad you got some great pictures of this event!
Although I have heard about mud baths, I’ve never had any interest in trying them. After seeing your pictures and reading your reactions I would certainly give it a try.
