Costa Rican Animals

A few days ago my dad  and I went on a walk around the town of Uvita, Costa Rica and saw a bunch of macaws. They were scarlet macaws and were very pretty. There are 3 main species  of macaw: hyacinth, scarlet, and blue and gold macaws although there are 16 other types of macaw. The hyacinth macaw is the largest species of flying macaw in the world although it is not the biggest macaw in general which is the kākāpō of New Zealand. We have seen hyacinth macaws in brazil.

We saw a toucan later; it was a chestnut mandibled toucan. We also saw keel billed toucans and emerald toucanets (go to https://costa-rica-guide.com/nature/wildlife/toucans-in-costa-rica/ for more info). There are 6 types of toucans in Costa Rica.

We found some hermit crabs on the beach.

.  Later we went to a national park that had some monkeys.  They were capuchins.  We also saw howler monkeys. Howler monkeys are also called congos. They are bigger than capuchins and travel in smaller groups.

. We saw plenty of iguanas.  We have seen two types of iguanas, green iguanas and striped iguanas. Striped iguanas are the only animal that can eat the manzana de la muerte. The manzana de la muerte is a small apple looking fruit that is very toxic.

  1. Syd, What an interesting story. I looked up your reference and found that those docile looking toucans can be quite vicious–even attacking humans! Like I said last night, you all have had such an amazing variety of experiences with all of the zoo-like animals that you have seen. The zip line adventure just topped it all off. Life might be boring back home. You might have to have your dad rig up a zip line and a few other attractions in your back yard.

  2. Wow! The macaws are beautiful! You could make an animal travel book with all different creatures you’ve seen in all the different locations. You certainly have enough great pictures and lots of relevant information to share. It could rival National Geographic!! 💕

  3. This sounds like a zoo like adventure except you are in the cage with the birds and animals and there are no cages! 😳 how fun!
