Astronomy in Chile

A couple of days ago we went to an observatory.  We went from 9:30-11:30 so we could see the stars.  I liked the building  where we were looking through a giant telescope because the roof could turn so you could see different stars.  The first thing we saw was Jupiter.  You could see the faint rings on Jupiter.  Then we saw the Orion nebula.  When we saw Orion Nebula you could see his sword too. A nebula is a cloud of dust and gas where stars are forming.

Camping under the Small Magellenic Cloud

Then we saw something really cool: another galaxy.  It was a Magellanic cloud. It was like a bunch of little white speckles.  Then we found out one of the stars in the Southern Cross is just 3 stars.  The indigenous people who first came here were astronomers. We were looking at  a circle of stars around the south pole that rotates 360 degrees each night plus 1 degree. So if you look at the same place  at the same time each night it will be somewhere else. They used the stars to figure out what time of year it was  After we looked at the stars for a while we watched a movie about the big bang and stuff but I was really tired and pretty much asleep by then.

  1. Thanks, Syd. I have always been interested in astronomy and have wished that I could see the Southern Cross. You did it! Thanks for your post and your many stories of your fabulous visit to South America.
