You’re Doing What Now?!

Dear Friends,

If you’ve made it here, you’ve probably heard the news: We’re taking a year off!

Off from what, you ask? Well, work, school, home, just all of it. It’s time for a change and time for some adventure, and we’re about to do all of that in spades.

The long and short of it is, Jessie and Marcus are taking a year away from their jobs and Audrey and Sydney are taking a year away from public school (and will road-school for a year; more on that in a future post). We’ll start off with a road trip through the U.S. to visit family and visit some national parks, and take a fun break in Europe with family. After a few months of “easy” travel, we’ll ship our car to South America, then meet it there and drive home. Adventures will ensue!

We’ll be traveling in our Toyota 4Runner, which we’ve affectionately named “Haruka Maru.” Thanks to Marcus’s engineering prowess and hard work, she’s outfitted with a rooftop tent that sleeps all four of us, folding bed inside (in case somebody needs to sleep “downstairs,”) dual batteries, a powered cooler, a slide-out drawer system, plus more improvements we’ll share about in time.

You probably have questions. So do we! We’ve done a lot of research, we’ve car-camped plenty, and the grown-ups in the group traveled overland through Africa in an unsuitably small car for about six weeks that one time, so we have a very slight idea of what we’re in for. But also, we cannot possibly anticipate what this year will bring, other than plenty of opportunities to learn and grow as individuals and as a family.

We’ll do our best to document our most interesting stories here (which is part of the road-school plan, of course.). Stay tuned, and send us your questions. They’ll very likely become the topic of a future post.
