If all goes to plan, in just about 48 hours we will be driving away from our house and not coming back for a year. The gravity of the actual departure is starting to hit us, and emotions are running high. The kids worry about missing their friends and missing out on fun back home. We’ve been busy all week hanging out with as many friends as possible. We’re making great memories with all their favorite people, and everyone is exhausted.
Meanwhile, we are frantically working through checklists and making new checklists as we go. Sometimes we just do whatever task is immediately before us that seems to need doing. Last-minute work emails and timesheets, heaps of laundry and dishes, boxing up clothes we won’t wear for a year or more but want to keep, returning library books, cleaning out the pantry, not to mention packing clothes, toiletries, bedding, tools, homeschool supplies, electronic devices, communications gear, camp kitchen, and anything else we might need for a year-long road trip.
On Monday we’ll roll out towards our first night of camping in Buffalo, NY. There’s plenty to do, but we’re enjoying the progress we make toward departure with every little chore we do.
